The Role of the Five Senses in Research: A Review Study

Abstract

This research paper examines the role of the five human senses (ḥawās al-khamsah) in the process of knowledge acquisition and research from both Islamic and contemporary scientific perspectives. The study highlights how sensory perception serves as the foundational stage of human cognition, as emphasized in the Qur’an, Hadith, and classical Islamic scholarship, particularly the works of Imam al-Ghazali. Furthermore, the paper integrates modern findings from neuroscience and cognitive science to demonstrate that empirical observation through sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch forms the basis of systematic research. The study concludes that Islamic epistemology and modern scientific methodology converge on the principle that sensory experience, guided by intellect and ethical responsibility, is essential for meaningful research and human development.
